Missoni shifts control: fsi takes majority stake in italian fashion house

The Missoni Group has undergone a significant transformation, with Italian equity firm FSI now firmly in control after a strategic acquisition that marks a new chapter for the iconic Italian fashion house.

A family legacy yields to strategic investment

For decades, the Missoni family maintained unwavering ownership of their namesake brand, a testament to their dedication and creative vision. However, in 2018, they initiated a partial sale to FSI, securing a 41.2% stake. Now, that stake has swelled to a commanding 73%, with Katjes Quiet Luxury holding the remaining 27%.

This shift, finalized on May 21st, isn’t simply a change of ownership; it represents a deliberate alignment with a financially robust partner. The Missoni family, while relinquishing full control, will continue their collaborative efforts with Fondazione Ottavio e Rosita Missoni, ensuring the brand’s distinctive heritage remains paramount.

Despite the transition, Missoni continues to demonstrate remarkable momentum. Revenues have consistently surpassed €130 million, with profits doubling year-over-year. This robust performance is largely attributed to the leadership of CEO Livio Proli, a veteran of Giorgio Armani, who brought a wealth of operational expertise to the role in 2020.

Alberto Caliri, the brand’s creative director, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership: “This marks the beginning of a new phase of growth, supported by two financially strong shareholders united by a shared passion and a long-term vision.”

Barnaba Ravanne, co-founder and co-managing partner of FSI, will assume the role of chair, guiding the board and ensuring the brand’s continued evolution. The company’s employees have expressed their gratitude for the family’s legacy, confident that Missoni’s unique aesthetic identity and core values will endure.

FSI’s statement underscored this sentiment: “The company’s employees would like to sincerely thank the Missoni family, with the conviction that the Missoni brand will remain faithful to its distinctive heritage and to its unique ability to reassure and inspire at the same time, in full coherence with its core values and aesthetic identity.”

The transaction signals a deliberate move towards sustained expansion, solidifying Missoni’s position within the luxury fashion landscape. It’s a calculated play, betting on both established expertise and a fresh injection of financial backing.
