Luxury greek escape: former airbnb exec unveils biospheric sanctuary
Forget the relentless ping of notifications. Tella Thera, a breathtaking new spa and resort nestled on the Cretan hillside, is a deliberate antidote to the digital deluge – a refuge meticulously crafted by a man who traded Silicon Valley for sun-drenched olive groves.
Loukas tourkomanis’s radical retreat
The mastermind behind this haven? Loukas Tourkomanis, a former Airbnb executive who, after witnessing the relentless churn of the IPO world, made a startling decision: to abandon the tech hustle and fulfill a lifelong dream of creating a truly restorative experience. He’s built Tella Thera from the ground up, a climate-sensitive resort deeply rooted in the principles of sustainability – and, frankly, a healthy dose of blissful detachment.

A design rooted in nature
This isn’t your typical opulence. The architecture, a collaboration between Pieris.Architects, is deliberately bioclimatic, utilizing local materials and natural light to minimize environmental impact. Picture poured concrete sculpted to embrace the landscape, sheep grazing peacefully nearby, and the constant murmur of the Mediterranean. Every detail, from the custom-sized pillows (Singapore-made, naturally) to the linen uniforms crafted by Thiswasasheet – an Athens upcycling company – speaks to a singular vision. Tourkomanis himself, a man who tested the property with his own wedding in 2025, embodies this ethos. ‘We want people to disconnect,’ he states, ‘to look into the mountains, look into the sea, and reconnect with people and the environment.’

The sensory experience
Upon arrival, guests are whisked away via golf cart to their individual suites – a collection of twenty sandy poured concrete havens set amidst undulating terraces. Each boasts a private pebble patio, kiln-dried beechwood lounges, and a small, heated pool. But the details are what truly set it apart: native plants, a serene view of the cerulean sea, and a palpable sense of calm. And let’s be clear: there’s virtually no plastic in sight. From repurposed towels to sustainable amenities, Tella Thera operates on a philosophy of mindful consumption.
Beyond the spa
However, Tella Thera isn’t simply a place for pampering. Tourkomanis, a devotee of Crete’s rich history, intends for it to be a gateway to the island’s wonders. A bespoke plan, orchestrated by head of guest experience Foteini Mavromataki, allowed me to spend a morning hiking to Balos Beach and exploring the Sirikari Gorge – followed by a foraging excursion for wild greens to create a traditional hortopita. A private wine tasting at PoTolo, a nearby estate specializing in low-intervention wines, rounded out the day. And yes, a magnesium-oil massage was undoubtedly part of the equation, courtesy of Asimina Gkraikousi.
A holistic approach
Tella Thera is not a place to pursue a strict detox. It’s a sanctuary for those seeking an immersive experience – a convergence of gastronomy, culture, and connection. It’s a reminder that wellness isn’t about deprivation, but about embracing the richness of the world around us. Membership with Design Hotels ensures a level of curated luxury, while the resort quietly operates independently, a testament to Tourkomanis's singular vision.
