Model Alton Mason Balances High Fashion with Anime and Gaming

Alton Mason, one of the world’s leading male models, is navigating a life that seamlessly blends high fashion with passions for anime, video games, and a deep sense of gratitude. Speaking with Dan Jackson, Mason revealed a surprising upcoming event: an anime festival, One Piece Fest, organized with friends including Nasir Dean (son of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys).

A Passion for Anime and Gaming

Mason shared his excitement for the festival, mentioning he's preparing a signature red shirt – a nod to the protagonist of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy. His interests extend to the fast-paced fighting game Tekken, noting a surprising connection between the aesthetic of designer Rick Owens’ runway looks and the game's world. “When I wear Rick Owens, I feel like a Tekken character,” he said.

Beyond his modeling career, which includes appearances on billboards, the Met Gala red carpet, and a role as Little Richard in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Mason enjoys anime series like Castlevania, Berserk, and Michiko & Hatchin. This reveals a grounded side to a figure often perceived as otherworldly.

Gratitude and Inspiration

Mason recently debuted a new campaign for GapStudio, the high-end line from American brand Gap, led by designer Zac Posen. He emphasized the importance of gratitude, particularly as the first Black male model to walk in a Chanel show. He credits his parents, from small towns in Louisiana and Nebraska, for instilling in him a desire for more, and expresses appreciation for the trailblazers who paved the way for him in the industry, including Grace Jones, Tyson Beckford, Naomi Campbell, Armando and Fernando Cabral, and Bethann Hardison.
